Guide to Private Swim Lessons in NYC

How do lessons work?

Private swim lessons in New York City are often much more flexible than our Hamptons schedule. Rather than trying to fit an entire season into a few summer months, many NYC families choose to book lessons one at a time or maintain a consistent weekly schedule throughout the year.

Simply let us know your preferred days and times, and we'll reach out to the instructor we believe is the best fit for your swimmer. If that time slot isn't available, we'll offer the closest available option.

Do you teach year-round?

Yes! Because most of the pools we teach in are indoors, lessons are available year-round. Unlike outdoor pools, weather is rarely a factor. Unless there is a significant snowstorm or severe weather event, lessons typically continue as scheduled.

Can you teach in my apartment or condominium building?

Absolutely. We teach in private residential buildings throughout New York City.

Over the years, we've worked with many apartment and condominium buildings and carry full liability insurance. If your building requires proof of insurance, we're happy to provide our certificate directly to your management office or send it to you. If needed, we can also have your building added as an additional insured, and turnaround is typically very quick.

What happens when the instructor arrives?

Your instructor will typically arrive at your building a few minutes before your lesson, check in with the front desk or doorman if necessary, and meet you at the pool. They will also have your contact information should they need to reach you.

Do parents/caregivers need to be in the water?

In most cases, no.

Unless there are multiple young children who require constant hands-on assistance, parents are welcome to relax poolside while the lesson takes place. We also frequently work with nannies and caregivers, who may either observe from the deck or participate in the lesson when appropriate.

Can siblings or friends take lessons together?

Yes. We offer both private, semi-private lessons and group lessons up to 4 children.

If siblings or friends are close in age and ability, they can often share a lesson. We'll help determine whether a semi-private lesson is the best fit and explain any pricing differences before scheduling.

What if I don't know which instructor to choose?

One of the advantages of working with Hamptons Swim is that you don't have to.

Rather than asking families to sort through dozens of instructor profiles, we'll recommend the instructor we believe is the best fit based on your swimmer's age, experience, goals, schedule, and location. Every instructor is trained in the Hamptons Swim teaching philosophy, so you can expect the same high standard of instruction regardless of who teaches your lesson.

Do I need to reserve the pool?

This depends on your building's policies. Some buildings require residents to reserve a lane or notify management before lessons, while others do not. We recommend checking with your building in advance, and we're always happy to work within your building's procedures.

What should we bring to lessons?

Our instructors bring a swim bag stocked with teaching equipment, including a kickboard and a selection of toys to help make lessons engaging and fun. If your child has a favorite toy they'd like to use in the pool, they're always welcome to bring it.

We recommend bringing:

  • Swimsuit

  • Towel

  • Goggles

  • Swim diaper (for children who are not potty trained)

If there is any additional equipment needed for your lesson, we'll let you know in advance.
